(Mohammad Masood Ahmed (2025), Would You Like To Know Something About Islam, Second Edition, Crescent Books Inc., New York, USA. Pg. 357-371)

Although I have covered a substantial amount of material in a series of articles regarding Islam, I still come across numerous other questions that require answers. As previously mentioned, Islam is a vast ocean of knowledge, and while I have explored much, this remains just a tiny fraction of what Islam contains.

Although it might seem small at times, our world is immense and filled with diverse individuals. Some are eager to learn about Islam, while others seek a more profound understanding or are contemplating embracing the faith and need thorough, satisfactory answers. I have endeavored to address the needs of everyone in my articles; therefore, readers may choose to skip certain sections or follow me through the entire text. Nonetheless, the content is engaging, and understanding Islam will certainly be beneficial in various ways.

From Whom Should We Learn Islam?

There are some aspects of life for which a small amount of information will suffice, but there are also some aspects for which complete information and understanding are required. Indeed, information on Islam is extensively accessible. However, this fragmented and unfiltered information can often lead to misunderstandings and inaccuracies. To truly grasp Islamic concepts, principles, practices, and inner wisdom, a more profound understanding is necessary.

While this book aids in comprehending Islam, nothing beats an in-person conversation for thorough understanding. So, who should a seeker turn to for guidance on Islam? Just as plumbers aren't equipped to handle electrical tasks and vice versa, only qualified Muslim scholars should be consulted.

To effectively teach Islam, it is essential that a Muslim possesses adequate knowledge and actively practices what they preach 2. Individuals who are unqualified and do not practice their faith themselves can lead others astray and, in my view, should never be consulted or trusted. Arrogant assertions like "I know a lot” or “I should teach anything I know” fail to serve their purpose and can cause harm to oneself, others, and certainly to Islam. Allah states:

اُدْعُ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ...    ۝  3
Call towards the way of your Lord with solid strategy and good counsel, and debate with them in the most desirable manner…

Certainly, not everyone has the wisdom or ability to engage in an articulate debate. Extensive knowledge and expertise are required, and a scholar must demonstrate both teaching qualities and courtesy. Additionally, a student must thoughtfully select the individual from whom they will learn about Islam.

How Much One Ought To Know To Be A Good (Practicing) Muslim?

One must hold fast to the basic beliefs under all circumstances, because this is the least requirement for success in the Hereafter. To avoid punishment in the Hereafter, one must fulfill their basic obligatory duties on time. I believe that what Islam asks of us in this brief life is minimal compared to the everlasting reward it provides. Those seeking to enhance their piety, uplift themselves, reach spiritual heights, and draw closer to Allah must exert greater effort and explore Islam more deeply. Nevertheless, Allah does not demand more than we are able to give.

Can ‘Truth’ Be Found Only Through Religion?

Generally, we learn through our senses. Regardless of our intelligence, if our senses fail to perceive something, how can we learn from them? Understanding general truths can often be challenging, even with our senses; thus, how can we grasp absolute truths without extraordinary means? Religion, alongside its spiritual wisdom, serves as an extraordinary means, yet even with its support, we still rely on the Lord’s help. Ultimately, it is only through His divine guidance that we can be led to absolute truths.

The most effective means of discovering and comprehending the truth is through divine revelations imparted by the Lord to His Prophets sym-1. A genuine grasp of the profound wisdom contained in these revelations can foster an unwavering belief in the unseen. Those who have faith in the unseen find solace in not needing additional inquiry; however, for those who seek visible proof to believe, their desire will remain unfulfilled, as “the unseen truths” pertain to matters of the afterlife and lie beyond our reach.

Science represents “human effort,” while religion transcends "human effort.” Science is merely a tool which answers specific questions and provides solutions for the ease of mankind. Thus, it lacks the scope and resources to gauge the ultimate truth.

Allah states:

Finally, We will indeed show them Our signs everywhere and within themselves, until it becomes evident to them that without a doubt, this is the truth. Is it not enough that your Lord, without a doubt, is a witness to everything? Remember that those people are uncertain about meeting their Lord. Remember that He encompasses everything.

Having faith entails believing without direct evidence. Once all truths are unveiled, belief becomes irrelevant and pointless. Countless science followers, who failed to embrace ultimate truths and realities, have perished in their quest to witness these truths. Only the path of the Lord, specifically the religious and Islamic paths, guides individuals toward truths and ultimate truths.

Can One Live in America / The West And At The Same Time Be A Good Muslim?

If one has truly read this book and understood the Islamic concepts, worshipping processes, and duties described therein, I do not believe it is difficult to understand how to be both a good Muslim and a responsible citizen of the United States, European countries, or elsewhere. Islam does not strip anyone of their citizenship or nationality, nor does it mandate that Muslims only reside in Islamic nations.

I truly believe that residing in the West while practicing Islam offers more rewards. If a Muslim is in an environment where he can't act in an un-Islamic way, though such places don't truly exist, what reward can he gain? Conversely, in a setting where a Muslim has the freedom to act as he pleases, yet chooses to control his impulses and fulfill his Islamic responsibilities, he genuinely merits a greater reward.

Muslims in America, Europe, and other parts of the world participate actively in nearly all facets of their societies. They must adhere to their faith while also following local laws and regulations as citizens. Additionally, it's important for society to fulfill its obligations to its Islamic citizens. From my personal experience, I can confidently say that these societies are effectively serving the needs of all their citizens, including Muslims.

No Western nation typically restricts Muslims from fulfilling their religious obligations, nor does it force them to engage in haram (Islamically prohibited) acts. If a weak Muslim engages in haram acts and justifies this behavior due to peer pressure or the pursuit of modernity, feeling occasional shame for being Muslim, then America/West is not accountable for his actions. Such a Muslim has no grounds to blame America/Western lifestyles; he should instead adhere to Islamic principles and seek spiritual rewards. Islam's guiding principle is to sacrifice worldly desires for ultimate success, regardless of whether one lives in America, Europe, or an Islamic country.

Allah safeguards and helps genuine believers, yet He does not aid those who lead hypocritical lives. There is religious freedom in the West; however, if Muslims encounter some obstacles from time to time, these are only temporary. I am confident that once everyone comprehends Islam correctly, it will promote mutual understanding and happiness for all. Overall, Muslims are rewarded for their patience and resilience, and they should strive to promote understanding of Islam, especially through their character.

Is There Any Flexibility In Following Islamic Rules?

Islam would not be fit for human nature if it did not provide flexibility for varying situations and circumstances. Since Islam contains guidance for all times and circumstances, it must provide the required flexibility to practice Islamic rules, and it does. It must also do the same if it is truly fit for human nature.

Islam offers flexibility tailored to each individual's unique circumstances. Its primary aim is not to impose rigid rules on people, but to foster a connection with the Creator, enabling them to achieve piety according to their abilities and efforts. To fulfill this objective, Islam requires the strict observance of core principles while providing ample flexibility for those who face limitations or obstacles. An individual’s circumstances and intentions are crucial in guiding their daily actions. Allah knows our capabilities, situations, and the motivations behind everything we do. We can deceive others and ourselves, but we cannot deceive Allah.

In predominantly Muslim regions, practicing and upholding Islamic duties and regulations is generally easier, as society offers the necessary support. In contrast, in many areas labeled as non-Islamic, following Islam can be more complex. Numerous instances highlight both the strictness and adaptability of Islamic principles. Muslims need to recognize these factors to avoid exceeding boundaries or placing unnecessary burdens on themselves. Furthermore, non-Muslims should also grasp the rigidity and flexibility of Islamic rules if they choose to revert to Islam, ensuring they do not later regret this significant decision.

For example, the five daily salah (obligatory prayers) must be performed. However, if an individual is unable to stand due to weakness, illness, or other valid reasons, they are permitted to pray while seated. If sitting is also not possible, one can pray while lying down, using head movements to simulate ruku and sujud, which fulfills the requirement. Women may be excused from outside duties, but can go outside when necessary. Fasting during Ramadan is mandatory for Muslims; however, those who are traveling or ill may be exempt for that day or days and can make up the fast at a later time. Hajj is required once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able to perform it. If someone's travel route is dangerous, such as in times of war, they may postpone their travel until it is safe. These are just a few examples among many. In extreme situations, even what is typically prohibited may become permissible, but only to the extent necessary. 5

Why Are Alcohol And Pork Prohibited In Islam?

I would like to be very frank here and say that regarding Allah’s commandments, Muslims are advised against questioning why. Nonetheless, seeking knowledge and understanding the reasoning behind a commandment is perfectly acceptable.

Every rule, regulation, permission, or prohibition in Islam serves to benefit humanity. The disadvantages of eating pork and drinking alcohol far exceed any advantages. These practices promote sinful behavior and lead to various physical and spiritual problems. The core purpose of Islam is to safeguard humanity from harm, unwholesome desires, and immoral actions, allowing individuals to achieve their intended purpose of creation. Therefore, anything that supports this goal is permitted, while anything that obstructs it is prohibited.

Globally, the consequences of alcohol consumption are widely recognized, leaving little need for further discussion. Similarly, medical science is well-informed about the adverse effects of pork on human health. While the spiritual, psychological, and behavioral detriments of eating pork may not be immediately apparent, they are indeed factual, and a closer examination of human behavior can confirm this. Allah has nothing to gain or lose from our dietary choices; however, when Islam addresses any topic, there is always a deeper significance behind it.

If Islam Is Such A Great Religion, Why Are There So Many Factions, And Which One Is The Right One?

There is no question that Islam is the greatest religion, because it is prescribed by Allah, the Almighty Lord. There is only one Islam, despite the many divisions and denominations among its followers. While Muslims may be divided into various groups, Islam itself remains singular. Islam's existence is not contingent upon Muslims; rather, Muslims derive their existence from Islam. Islam is indivisible, while Muslims can and have been divided. Allah has granted everyone the power and free will to choose between good and evil, success and failure, among other options. Allah instructs Muslims to:

وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا...    ۝ 6
And strongly grasp the rope of Allah, all of you, and do not be divided...

In a very famous hadith, Prophet Muhammad sym-9 stated:

There were 72 factions in Bani (children of) Israil, the family of Yaqub (Jacob), and in my ummah (community), there will be 73 factions, out of which only one will be the rightly guided, the vindicated one. The Companions inquired as to which one it would be. He replied, “The one that follows me and my Companions, the Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaiah.” 7

The Prophet sym-9 embodied the Quran, while his Companions followed both, the Quran and the Sunnah. Through their lives and dedicated efforts, the Companions (Sahaba) transmitted the Quran and Sunnah to Muslims, who have observed them ever since. Anyone who strays from the Ahl al-Sunnah (people of the Sunnah) bears responsibility for their own innovation, deviation, and separation. A thorough examination of any deviated group will show that it misinterprets one or more fundamental principles of Islam. In contrast, the Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaah adheres entirely to Islam as established by the Quran and Sunnah.

It's remarkable to realize that, despite the numerous factions and sub-factions, all Muslims share the same core beliefs. ALL Muslims:

  • Believe in tawhid (Oneness of Allah)
  • Believe in the finality of Prophethood; NO prophets will come after Prophet Muhammad sym-9
  • Believe in the Holy Quran as the word of Allah.
  • Face the Kabah during Salah (obligatory prayers of worship)
  • Fast in the month of Ramadan
  • Provide assistance to the impoverished and those in need.
  • Fulfill the obligation of Hajj, if and when possible.
  • Believe in the arrival of Judgment Day.
  • Believe in Heaven and Hell.
  • Have faith in the everlasting existence of the Hereafter.

According to some scholars, the basic differences among the factions are secondary and tertiary in nature. Nevertheless, there are some fundamental differences that require deep study. Some factions are extreme, while others are unnecessarily liberal, whereas the true Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaah is moderate, as required by Islam to remain on the right path. Keep in mind that the true path can only be one, which in Islam is the Sirat al-Mustaqim (the straight path). Whoever is truly on this path from their heart will be recognized on Judgment Day. Every Muslim must strive to understand and follow this righteous path. The majority of the Muslim ummah belongs to Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jamaah, which is the righteous path.

What Does Islam Say About Predestination?

If man, his actions, and his fate are predestined, then the question is, by whom? If our Lord predestines everything, one might wonder if it is unjust for Him to place us in the struggles of life. If all is predestined, what is the purpose of testing humans and granting them free will? What is the significance of Judgment Day? He could have created us and instantly sent some to Paradise while casting others into Hell.

In Islam, both success and failure, as well as our ultimate destination, are not predetermined. Although Allah knows our fate, He has not imposed it upon us. Having knowledge does not mean that He caused it to happen. He maintains control over many aspects to govern the affairs of the universe, including humanity. Yet, He simultaneously grants humans the ability to steer their lives on Earth and make choices about their fate in the Hereafter.

Humans cannot dictate the timing, location, or manner of their death, yet they have full control over whether their lives are pious or impious. Allah is fully aware of our past and future actions; however, He does not compel/cause them. Indeed, He is the Creator of us and our actions 8, while we are Kasib, who choose to act and strive for our intentions. Our accountability in Islam is rooted in the intentions we hold and the efforts we make, which lead to the consequences of our actions. While Allah is All-Knowing and has complete knowledge of our destiny, Islam teaches that we are not helplessly bound by fate. Misunderstandings about predestination often arise from arrogance—believing one is guaranteed Paradise—or from ignorance and despair—believing one is doomed regardless of effort. Islam firmly denounces both arrogance and despair, encouraging hope, humility, and continuous striving in obedience to Allah.

Does Islam Guarantee Complete Peace And Promise A Trouble-Free Life Here?

We come to this world to be tested, and a testing ground is never trouble-free and can never be full of peace. How can individuals be tested for patience and steadfastness in a life that is entirely trouble-free and peaceful? If there are no troubles in life, how will people remember their Lord, pray to Him, or seek to please Him? How can individuals assist one another and gain the Lord’s blessings if everyone is content and without worries?

This world is not Heaven, but it does possess some characteristics of Hell, teaching us how to prepare for salvation from Hellfire. If life were entirely free of troubles and serene, we wouldn't understand the deeper pain and suffering of Hell. Islam offers inner peace, though not an absence of conflict in this life. Ultimately, if we achieve success, we will secure both peace and happiness in the Hereafter. While Islam does not promise a life without difficulties on Earth, it equips its followers with the tools to navigate life effectively. It grants us adequate peace and happiness to strive towards ultimate success.

If people want to attain inner peace, they must choose servitude to the Lord and liberate themselves from bondage to society and the self. Regarding the resolution of man’s problems, the famous French philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, suggests that man abandon the state of society and return to the state of nature. In my opinion, since this is not feasible, it cannot be considered a solution. Man can no longer revert to the state of nature. Is it possible to transform all thriving metropolises and trade centers to establish a state of nature? No. Man has already come a long way, so for him, this is not a viable solution.

The problem is not cities or the state of society; the true issue lies within man himself. As long as he chooses to be a slave to society, he will continuously face challenges. Only through slavery to the Lord, his true Master, is he freed from the shackles of society, desires, and lust. By serving the Master of all masters, he will find peace wherever he resides. The true Master does not require man to abandon society to attain peace and happiness; He provides him with what he needs within it. For a Muslim, absolute peace and a guarantee of a trouble-free life are not the objectives. The true aim is to please his Lord and Master and to achieve success in the Hereafter.

What Are The Benefits/Rewards Of Embracing Islam?

Once I am dead, I am no longer an American, a Russian or a Briton. I am no longer anybody; I am a dead body. However, even at this point, it will still matter what faith I belonged to and/or practiced. My funeral ceremonies will not take place according to my nationality but according to my religion. Once I am dead, all connections to this world are cut off, but the connection with my religion never severs. Even after burial, my faith will still matter.

As mentioned earlier, our stay in Al-Barzakh, the transitional state or period, is determined on the basis of our faith and religious practices. According to Islam, salvation is not possible through any other religion; not being a Muslim means being the ultimate loser. The greatest reward for embracing Islam is that one is saved from becoming the ultimate loser. All previous sins are forgiven as one submits to the Lord’s will and embarks on the journey of pleasing Him, not according to one’s wishes, but as per His direction and guidance. A revert to Islam is one who returns home to where they belong. Islam does not promise anything less, nor does a follower need anything more.

If Someone Is Interested In Embracing Islam, But First Wishes To See A Muslim Completely Reflective Of Islam, Where Does One Look?

Every Muslim should be a complete reflection of Islam and an embodiment of the virtues and values it presents. If this were the case, searching for a mu’min (devout believer) nearby wouldn’t be necessary. Though true believers are plentiful within the Muslim ummah (community), are you aware of any in your area? I'm uncertain. Even if you find one, do you possess the time and patience to examine their character and way of life thoroughly/thoughtfully?

To find genuine representations of Islam, should one rely on prominent Muslim figures, like royalty, political leaders, and their backers, religious authorities, educators, scholars, and those who blend Sufism with eccentricity? I certainly don’t believe so.

If you're still truly determined and open to exploring other perspectives, then look beyond the media to witness the countless individuals participating in daily salah (obligatory prayers) in mosques worldwide. Seek out the thousands of dedicated imams, teachers, and preachers who devote their lives to Islam, not for material gain, fame, or power. Consider the 1.9 billion everyday Muslims who, while not in leadership roles, exhibit deep devotion to their Lord. They foster love within their communities, display generosity and contentment, practice Islam with genuine sincerity, and exemplify the virtues taught by Islam. They truly reflect the essence of Islam. They strive to do their best, which is all that Allah asks of them. This is where your aspirations can be fulfilled. You may need to journey far to encounter these individuals, but I assure you, you will find it worthwhile.

In answering the previously mentioned question, I recommend that you study Islam deeply instead of wasting valuable time seeking practical reflections. Your destiny is at stake, and that is something worthy of your concern. I feel the quickest path is to explore the lives of those Muslims who genuinely embody Islam.

Does Islam Teach Hate For Non-Muslims, Their Teachings, And Lifestyle?

Islam is the guidance not just for Muslims, but for all of humanity. It comes from the Lord, the Creator of all people, not just Muslims. Prophet Muhammad sym-9 was sent by the Lord for everyone, not only Muslims. The Holy Quran instructs Muslims and calls upon all of humanity to pursue a peaceful and righteous path towards a successful outcome. So, how can Islam be associated with hate?

Hate prevents progress and stifles peace and happiness. It obstructs the expression of love and generosity, as well as the growth of one's community. Hate cannot unite individuals, offer guidance, or illuminate their hearts. It hinders a person's true humanity and obstructs sincere devotion to their Lord.

Islam does not advocate for hatred towards others. Instead, it teaches disdain for sinful actions and oppression. It promotes the rejection of lust, wrongdoing, and any act that harms humanity. Importantly, this form of “hate” is not driven by earthly or personal motives; it is aimed at achieving success in the Hereafter. The purpose of this series of articles is to clarify that none of Islam’s principles, teachings, or obligations endorse hatred towards others or their beliefs. Readers are encouraged to make their own judgments on this matter.

Let me say this very clearly: true Muslims do not intend to conquer this world but to win the hearts of the people. No one can conquer anyone’s heart with hate; it can only be done with love.

Should America And The West Fear Islam?

If I simply say, “no,” you may ask, “why not?” Al-Hamdu lillah (all praise is due to Allah), having studied Islam extensively and lived in the United States for forty-five years, I find nothing in Islam that should instill fear in anyone.

If this fear arises from negative aspects within the global Muslim community, I would ask: "Which community on Earth is devoid of negative elements?” Why target Islam specifically? If this apprehension is related to Islam being the fastest growing religion, it’s essential to note that this trend is global, not confined to the United States or Europe. Additionally, many religions have thrived in the U.S. and Europe historically without causing societal harm; in fact, they have enriched the American and Western experience. If it’s now Islam’s time to flourish, then so be it. These societies are organized, Intelligent, educated, religiously aware, patriotic, and capable of discerning right from wrong; they will not permit anyone to inflict harm upon them.

In America, millions of Muslims reside, consisting of first and second-generation immigrants, recent converts to Islam, and new Muslim immigrants arriving daily from various parts of the world. For centuries, and in some views, decades, Muslims have peacefully lived here and made substantial contributions to American society. They consider America their home. As lawabiding citizens—doctors, engineers, architects, business leaders, teachers, social workers, and more—they cherish and safeguard America, steadfastly continuing to enhance the welfare of their homeland. True Muslims always remain loyal to the land they inhabit.

Certainly, America and the West have the right to defend and enhance their security, but it’s important to recognize that there is no need to fear Islam. A genuine and thorough understanding of Islam and its followers could alleviate many misconceptions and anxieties surrounding the religion. My message to everyone is to seek knowledge about Islam rather than succumb to fear.

Why Embrace Islam When One Is Already Doing The Good That Islam Promotes?

My humble tone and the way i have presented Islam should not lead anyone to think that my intent is to convert them. I presented the facts about Islam in the manner that my personality and beliefs allowed me to do.

I confidently believe that there are good people in the world already doing much good; so, why should they embrace Islam? I respectfully acknowledge that I did not establish the rules. It is the Lord’s path, not mine or anyone else’s. If the Lord chooses to be pleased with humanity solely through Islam, what can I express? He is the Lord. My responsibility is to deliver the message in a straightforward and clear manner.

Islam teaches that one can attain various successes in this life by performing good deeds. However, to achieve true success in the Hereafter, one must go further: acknowledge Allah, follow His commands, and seek to earn His pleasure. While the rewards for good actions in this world are limited to this life, Muslims strive for eternal rewards in Paradise, along with earning Allah’s favor, through their good deeds. Though the Lord is merciful, we must recognize His sovereignty in the manner He has outlined to receive His mercy. In Islam, Muslims acknowledge His dominion and subsequently hope for His mercy.
